Introductory Way of the Medicine Horse
Facilitator: Carol Roush, LMT, AAI, Epona Senior Faculty Member
Assisted by: Sarah Sander, Equine Natural Movement Specialist
Cost: $595: Includes one night lodging, meals, bottled water, and workshop materials
Dates: July 31-August 1; September 4-5; or October 9-10, 2010
Hours: 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily
The Way of the Medicine Horse workshop is designed to improve horse/human relationships, strengthen connection to the intuitive authentic self, and bring awareness to old survival patterns of behavior that block our natural desire to move from surviving to thriving. The workshop will include the following basic Epona philosophies, skills and activities:
- Message Behind the Emotions: The Emotional Message Chart
- Congruent vs. incongruent emotional messages
- False Self (Conditioned Personality)/Authentic Self Metaphor
- Boundaries: Establishing and maintaining clear and consistent personal space
- Body Scan: Full body scan to determine baseline emotional and physical state
- Meet the Herd activity
- Reflective Round Pen Work
- Eight Essential Skills for Building Authentic Community (an introduction)
This is an introductory-level workshop and meets the Epona prerequisite for individuals who wish to do advanced work at Epona, including the Apprenticeship Program.

Reawakening: Life After Midlife
HORSE WISDOM FOR LIFE'S SECOND HALF
September 10-12, 2010
Facilitators: Mary-Louise Gould , Ed.M., AAI, Epona Senior Faculty and Dr. Nancy Coyne, M.D., AAI
Cost: $750
Hours: 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily, includes lunch, snacks, and materials.
Workshop begins at 10:00 a.m. on September 10 and concludes at 5:00 p.m. on September 12. Fee includes workshop materials, lunch, snacks, and bottled water each workshop day.
Come together with us to explore how horses can guide you in harvesting the promise of these precious years. Connect with others gathering to experience fully the unfolding of life – its pains and losses, its riches and joys:
- Shift gears from production, achievement, and caretaking responsibilities to living with consciousness, compassion, and generosity
- Slow down to reflect and experience yourself more deeply
- Reconnect with lost joys and experiment with new ones
- Let go of resentments, heal old wounds, and move into gratitude
We will engage in interactions with safe and gentle horses, the creative process, yoga, and mindfulness meditation on the path to unearthing relationship patterns, exploring energy fields, recognizing and activating your authentic selves, and embracing your potential for contentment with yourself and your life.
No riding experience is necessary.
The workshop is limited to 6 participants.
This program qualifies as an Introductory Epona Workshop and, along with other activities, will cover the basics of the Epona Approach to human development through The Way of the Horse:
- Using emotion as information
- Accessing a more authentic, creative presence
- Recognizing and moving beyond conditioned behaviors and thought patterns
- Boundaries: establishing and maintaining clear and consistent personal space
- Body Scan: using the body as a sensing device
- Hands on activities with horses as guides
- Developing essential skills for building Authentic Community
Mary-Louise Gould, Ed.M. is an Epona Approved Advanced Instructor and Epona Senior Faculty member. She co-facilitates the Epona Apprenticeship Program with Linda Kohanov and Shelley Rosenberg, as well as facilitating various other Epona programs in Arizona and elsewhere in the US. In her EFEL work and private consulting practice, her role is as a collaborator with people seeking to address their fears, access and communicate authentic feelings, listen to the wisdom of the body, become skilled at expressing unique and innate talents, and discover new pathways to intuition, creativity, and spirituality – or as Joseph Campbell puts it, as they increase their ability “to experience the rapture of being fully alive.”
Nancy Coyne, M.D., is a psychiatrist with many years' experience working with people in all phases of life. An artist herself, she uses creative process--writing and drawing, yoga and bodywork, EMDR and equine facilitated psychotherapy--as well as talk therapy, to help people heal from whatever trauma they have suffered and to flourish in their lives. She is an Epona Approved Advanced Instructor, a lifelong yoga practitioner, and teaches from a position of humility and beginner's mind.

Accessing Your Intuition Through the Way of the Horse
October 11-13, 2010
Facilitator: Shelley Rosenberg, AAI, Epona Senior Faculty
Cost: $550
A special package price for participants who attend both this introductory workshop plus the Advanced workshop: Riding Your Way Into Mutual Relationship (September 3-6) may attend both for $1500.
Hours: 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily, includes lunch, snacks, and materials.
This introductory-level workshop is designed to improve horse/human relationships, strengthen connection to the intuitive authentic self, and bring awareness to old survival patterns of behavior that block our natural desire to move from surviving to thriving. The workshop will include one private riding lesson plus the following basic Epona philosophies, skills, and activities:
- Using Emotion as Information
- Accessing a More Authentic, Creative Presence
- Recognizing and Moving Beyond Conditioned Behaviors and Thought Patterns
- Boundaries: Establishing and Maintaining Clear and Consistent Personal Space
- Body Scan: Using the Body as a Sensing Device
- Hands-on Activities with Horses as Guides
- Developing Essential Skills for Building Authentic Community
This workshop meets the Epona prerequisite for individuals who wish to do advanced work at Epona, including the Apprenticeship Program.
Shelley Rosenberg is an accomplished dressage trainer, rider and judge. An Epona approved advanced instructor, she is the author of recently published My Horses, My Healers, a memoir chronicling her journey to healing from a childhood of neglect and sexual abuse. She is also a gifted horse artist.
